Mari Payne on a blind date, hugs and climbing trees

An early childhood development specialist involved in the edutainment TV show “Takalani Sesame” writes about self-directed activities, “unteachable” children and a very small town.

1 In your career, you’ve mainly focused on children. Which role model/s have inspired you on your journey?

Maria Montesorri - Maria Montessori pioneered the concept of child-centered education. Using creative hands-on learning methods and encouraging self-directed activities, Montessori was able to form a unique instructional approach that provided successful results even in students that were considered “unteachable.” Montessori believed that early child education should encompass all parts of growth, including social, cognitive, and emotional development. To this day, the Montessori Method is featured in schools all over the world.

2 Which challenges are involved in developing television content for little ones?

It is very important to understand child development and which issues young children are facing in South Africa. At “Takalani Sesame” we conduct rigorous research to ensure that children retain the educational messages and content that we set out to achieve.

3 Where did you grow up, and what did you most enjoy doing when you were little?

I grew up in a very small town in the Free State. During my early childhood development years, we lived on a farm, and I enjoy outside play the most, climbing trees, building things, playing “school school” with my soft toys, and using my creativity and imagination.

Mari explains how to help your little one understand identity, belonging and consent, and suggests fun activities for adults and children.

4 Do you have a playful streak?

Yes, very much. Developing content for young children every day and keeping my 3-year-old busy, I must be playful and join in the play.

5 Where did you meet your husband? Tell us a little about him.

I met my husband on a blind date that was arranged by a mutual friend in 2007, while we were both working and living in Potchefstroom. He has a background in Criminal Law and is working as a Prosecutor. He has been my best friend ever since.

Also listen to Mari’s advice on helping your little one deal with big feelings.

7 How do you like to recharge your batteries?

Spending quality time with my husband and daughter.

8 Do you have a special word for moms?

Don’t be too hard on yourself. You are doing an amazing job!!
