Nicola Langridge on the attraction of numbers, snowboarding, and little sleep

A Cape Town wealth manager writes about working with high-net worth clients, a gap year in London, work-life balance, and a quiet cup of tea.

1 You’re a wealth manager at Private Client Holdings. Where did your interest in the financial world originate?

I enjoyed working with numbers as a child, but always thought I would go into the medical profession in some form like many of my family members. After two years studying to be a Chiropractor, I realised it was not my passion. I took a gap year in London to try and figure out what I wanted to do with my life. I decided on the world of finance and went to UCT where I studied a Business Science Finance degree.

2 What led you to join Private Client Holdings in 2016?

After a brief internship in New York while a student, I started my finance career by joining a local asset manager in Cape Town. While I learned a lot in those first few years and enjoyed the technical aspect of my role, I missed having direct contact with clients. This prompted me to study a Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Planning and I attained my CFP® designation. Shortly thereafter I accepted a position at Private Client Holdings and transitioned into my current wealth management role. Using the PCH family office approach to wealth management, I actively work with high-net-worth clients (with investable assets of $1m +) navigating complex wealth management strategies, with demanding fiduciary and tax structuring requirements, so they can achieve their financial goals.

3 You’re an avid traveller - tell us about some of your adventures.

I love immersing myself in the culture of the countries I visit. That is the reason I followed the “work and travel” route as a student. I did a gap year in London and worked as a bar tender, which allowed me to travel and experience Europe. I worked for 3 months at a ski resort in Colorado (USA) where I learned to snowboard and explore the USA, and I taught English in South Korea for two years, where I immersed myself in various Asian cultures.

4 You live in beautiful Cape Town. How do you feel about this city?

Cape Town is my home and where I choose to raise my family. Travelling around the world is amazing, but nothing compares to the beauty of Cape Town and the outdoor lifestyle that my family and I get to experience.

Listen to Nicola on the differences between men and women regarding investment and 6 elements holistic wealth management should include.

5 Which joys and challenges do you find in your work?

My joys are definitely related to creating the right solutions for my clients. Providing them with both financial security and the ability to reach their goals and dreams. That said, as much as you share in their successes you also share in the sad times, which can be hard at times.

6 What helps you maintain a healthy work-life balance?

I try to not take work home over weekends and prefer not to work from home. This allows me to separate my home life from work and focus on my family when I’m at home.

7 What has motherhood taught you?

To survive on very little sleep! Motherhood is both one of the toughest and most rewarding experiences. My kids force me to appreciate the smaller things in life and to sometimes see things from a different perspective.

8 Which everyday moments are precious to you?

Cuddles from my kids, that quiet cup of tea before the whole house wakes up and the rare moment that hubby and I get to watch a movie together after the kids have gone to bed!
