For women: reflecting on what shaped you and celebrating your uniqueness

Why would you need to “work hard” to maintain a low self-esteem? Human development specialist Dr Melodie de Jager explores our uniqueness, the phases of life we experience, the impact of our birth, and how we’re shaped by our genes and early childhood. She suggests ways to change limiting thought patterns, since brain plasticity means our past needn’t dictate our future.

In ep. 218 of the weekly podcast series Calm, Clear and Helpful, human development specialist Dr Melodie de Jager touches on

  • how a change in your body or physical environment influences you emotionally, socially and cognitively

  • Firstly, the phases of life:

*conception to 14 months after full-term birth – the prime time for physical development

*14 months to ± 3 years – the prime time for emotional development

*3 to 4 years – the prime time for social development

*4 to 11 years – the prime time for cognitive development

  • why women are shaped to be givers

  • Secondly, what has shaped each of us:

*mother love as the prototype of all kinds of love

*3 basic elements which determine who we become: our genes, childhood circumstances, and our interpretation of reality & our choices

*the 4 levels of awareness: unconscious incompetence, conscious incompetence, conscious competence and unconscious competence

  • Thirdly, identifying and reframing unhelpful thoughts

*where limiting thoughts/beliefs originate and how they colour our experiences

*changing your story about yourself, life, and others

    *the role of caring feedback

  •  Fourthly, reflecting on our uniqueness

*how our genes, individual life experiences and outlook contribute to our uniqueness

*experiencing our emotions before we can “take them off.”

In this podcast episode, Melodie refers to the French obstetrician Michel Odent and his book “The Scientification of Love”; the developmental phases of the German-American psychoanalyst Erik Ericson; leading coach, behavioral skills trainer and business consultant Robert Dilts; the American writer Og Mandino; “Tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Albom; the original Disney movie “Junglebook” and the Netflix animated movie “Spellbound.”

Melodie explains how you can find out if your (or your loved one’s) primary sense is visual, auditory, or kinaesthetic.

The poem Melodie mentions in this episode:

Todo Radica - Jose Luis Puerto

From one woman we come

and to one woman we go,

from mold to mold, from womb to womb,

because everything begins in the seed,

death and resurrection

and then again death

to be reborn to air,

into the dominion of light.

The womb is the measure of what we all are.
