Wayne Langridge on going to town barefoot, Mozambique, and what he knows at last

A founder and CEO of a South African online high school, financial adviser and entrepreneur writes about a fortuitous meeting at a sokkie, four sons who studied the exact same degree, and one surprising benefit of training.

Which childhood memory do you still treasure?

My father worked on the railways. We lived in Karoo towns. On Sunday afternoons he took us walking in nature. Till today I sometimes go to town barefoot. Alta, my wife, can’t stand it.

2 What do you wish you knew as a young adult?

I wish I knew what I wanted to do. It has always been a matter of doing things having to pay the bills. At 65 I at last know and enjoy the feeling of wanting to teach learners not to make the mistakes I did.

3 Which insight would you most like the learners attending WFA Online High School, of which you are the founder and CEO, to take with them when they leave school?

How does the saying go: whether you think you can, or think you can’t, you’re right.

4 Tell us about meeting your wife, Alta.

She studied at Potch. We met at a sokkie. She thought I was an alcoholic, I thought she was a “kloosterkoek”.

5 Together you and Alta have raised four sons. Do say more!

Having them is great. Everyone works for himself. They all studied the exact same degree. Alta blames me. Something duplicated. It is always about the right example.

6 What is the greatest privilege of being a father?

Great being the boss! Alta not mad about it. Joking. I know it worked when Alta tells me: They are exactly like you!

7 How do you maintain a healthy body?

Always eat the number or less calories your body consumes per day. Train. There is a benefit in it. You are able to take part in competitions seeing sexy girls.

8 If you could give your imagination free reign and fulfill any holiday wish, where would you go, and with whom?

We love the sea. Mozambique. With the boys and their families. They spearfish, I clean and pour the whiskey.
